About this deal

I still think it's very good though - part of the issue may be that I play almost entirely blitz when I play, so there's just not enough time to do the deeper calculation that I do when I'm solving Reinfeld problems. Two books that I would recommend are "Chessercizes" by Bruce Pandolfini, and "Chess Tactics for Students" by John Bain. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. I see nothing conclusive so I finally turn to the back and lo and behold he gives Bxf7 as the winning move with the line Rxf7, not even bothering with Nxf7.

Learn the 2-mover tactics from Polgar's big book COLD (there are about 1000 of 'em and they're not all obvious, at least to me! While in the tactics book the chapters can actually be misleading because often the combinations make use of several tactics so if you just look for the specific tactic in the chapter heading you could overlook things.A lot of them don't have one solution, but several, and a lot of them should definitely not have been in such a collecton at all. The next day I put it in an engine and it said after Bxf7 Black would even be a tiny bit better with Nxf7 and not Rxf7 which would be a blunder. some (well ok many) of 1001 'tactics' come out of thin air and don't make much sense -maybe they will when i'm stronger?

Strong club players should be able to solve most of the exercises from the diagram at first attempt. The book clearly has its faults, particularly the current reproduction, but I did not find any of these faults to be important. Reinfeld's solutions do usually represent the best continuation, and its important not to settle for the exchange, when you could have won a rook! The positions are well chosen, and have the feel of real game positions that you could actually meet, rather than rare and unrepresentative curiosities. Start going through Reinfeld or a similar intermediate tactic book (as someone would normally do, with calculation, etc.Any beginner who wants to improve their chess and take it to the next level should go through the book and solve the puzzles in this book thousands of times and defeating you at chess will not be easy for average chess players. The positions and solutions are available on the web, but I find even this poorly produced book more convenient to use than a computer screen. La plupart des problèmes sont consistants et riches en variantes à analyser; le seul petit reproche est que le niveau de difficulté n'est pas symbolisé.

Guess am just too visual a person to overlook this, even though I've heard many chess players say how good the puzzles themselves are.As you emerge yourself in chess, you'll definitely look for other chess tactics books available, but still this is a good start. My three star rating loses one star from the full five for the above comments on situations in chess learning not being realistic, and also one star off for the fact my copy has begun to have the pages fall from the stitching in the spine without me really doing anything to warrant that! minutes a day makes a good daily regimen and is virtually guaranteed to improve your play and your rating. I've actually done most of the Reinfeld book but in terms of actually being able to resolve the problems quickly again, I can probably only get 75% of the ones I've done. It has around 1500 tactical puzzles from actual Grand Master games, categorized by various themes, like annihilation of defense, discovered attack, pinning, clearance etc.
