About this deal

He has also written Winter in Madrid, a thriller set in Spain in 1940 in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War and Dominion, an alternate history novel set in a Britain following a fictional Axis victory in World War II. He suffers a lot of cruel jibes and ridicule during his time in York, including a humiliation at the hands of the king, which completes the disillusionment with Henry which has been growing in him since Dissolution. I do not normally read murder mystery novels, but since it was based in the Tudor dynasty, I decided to give it a shot and I wholeheartedly loved it.

Shardlake works on commission initially from Thomas Cromwell in Dissolution and Dark Fire and then Thomas Cranmer in Sovereign and Revelation. Elizabeth Tudor, the intellectual daughter of the king who has a similar temper to that of her father, but has a longing to help the Boleyn family in honor of her mother. Shardlake hadn't long been in York when a glazier was murdered and he found himself embroiled in mysteries which could have brought down the Tudor throne. This is the first Shardlake book that I have struggled with slightly but I am glad I persevered with it as I really enjoyed the book, especially the ending. Continue the number one bestselling historical series with Revelation, Heartstone, Lamentation and Tombland. It has been three years since the terrible events at Scarnsea monastery, and lawyer-detective Matthew Shardlake is living a quiet life in London - until a summons from Cromwell sees him embarking on another danger. Autumn, 1541: King Henry VIII has set out on a spectacular Progress to the North to attend an extravagant submission of his rebellious subjects in York. Para apuntalarla el rey decide hacer un viaje al norte el año de 1541 (una Jornada), para reprimir traiciones, recabar adhesiones, recibir pleitesías y derrochar su munificencia. It was pretty obvious and a little disappointing, but Sansom was still clever enough with how he integrated it to keep me reading.

I was in York for a few nights last year and recognise many of the landmarks encountered which is particularly engaging but they are all described so well that anyone will be able to visualise what Shardlake and Barak experience. Their relationship will be tumultuous at times, but it is caring and it does survive the test of time. From the internationally best-selling author Pam Jenoff, The Lost Girls of Paris is an emotional and powerful journey through friendship and betrayal during the Second World War, inspired by true events.

And when Shardlake and Barak stumble upon a cache of secret documents which could threaten the Tudor throne, a chain of events unfolds that will lead to Shardlake facing the most terrifying fate of the age .In the words of Lemony Snicket, a series of unfortunate and deadly and – increasingly bizarre – incidents befall Shardlake as he becomes the victim of repeated assassination attempts. Shortly after arriving in York, the murder of a glazier leaves Shardlake in possession of a chest of documents which, if they fall into the wrong hands, could be used to destroy the king. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. The papers are glimpsed by Shardlake before he is knocked unconscious by an unseen assailant who flees with the papers. This time Matthew Shardlake is faced with the most terrifying fate of the age: imprisonment in the Tower of London.

The mystery is made dense by so many political schemers and conniving courtiers out to serve their own interests. I’m not normally a fan of superhero narratives, and then I find an exception that grabs me by the throat and makes me love it. From her troubled family life to her disintegrating friendship with Calamity, there's no lever too cruel for this villain to use against her.He and Barak ponder how to get into them and, once opened, the cache reveals something that Shardlake could not have imagined. Compared to the first two books, this one is much darker as you are unsure how Shardlake and Barak will ever get out of their dangerous situations, but that is what makes it so remarkable. The moral dilemma of ensuring a man remains alive solely to face torture and execution are raised through the book but not exactly delved into. However, when the death of a local glazier appears to be foul play, Shardlake and Barak cannot help but look into it, for the sake of the country’s safety.
